🎒 How to Homeschool High Schoolers
Challenges and opportunities with homeschooling high school students
Last week, a reader asked us if we’d address how to homeschool high school students, so this post is focused on some of the unique facets of homeschooling high schoolers. We’ll address pros and cons to high school homeschooling, tutors, curriculum and preparing for college and/or careers. Homeschooling a child their whole lives versus transitioning out of school as a high schooler can be quite a different experience, so we’ll discuss how to handle this as well. The good news is that high schoolers are much more independent, which frees up time for family to focus on other needs. Also, colleges and universities are looking increasingly favorably on homeschoolers, recognizing qualities connected to homeschooling such as intellectual vitality, self-motivation, eclectic background, interesting projects and often, work experience.
We’ll cover
1. Transitions: Homeschooling since childhood vs Starting homeschooling as high schooler
2. Communicating with teens around learning
3. Subject expertise: “How do I teach something to my kid that I don’t know?”
4. High School Curriculum
5. “Why do I have to learn this?” : What to do when kids don’t see the point in learning something.
6. Getting into college or preparing for career & why colleges love homeschoolers so very much
